About

Jonathan Wilder Stanley Hoyte was born in 1972 at Stanford Hospital, California and grew up in neighboring Menlo Park. Jonathan attended Menlo-Atherton High School and graduated with honors in 1989. He then studied at Stanford University and graduated with a degree in Art History in 1993. While at Stanford, he participated in the Stanford  Overseas Studies program in Florence, Italy where he studied Italian and Art History. He interned on an archaeological survey in southern Italy and upon graduation from Stanford, interned at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and then the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. While in Venice he became interested in Art Conservation and returned to Florence. There he studied stone and ceramics conservation at the Instituto per l'Arte e Restauro "Palazzo Spinelli" for two years, graduating at the top of his class. He later went on to intern at the Objects Conservation Department for The Fine Arts Museum, San Francisco, and the Cloisters Museum, New York.  There he later performed conservation interventions as an independent. contractor.

For nearly twenty years, Jonathan has been based in Venice, Italy, focusing on the conservation of three dimensional art objects and historical monuments. He has become an authority on stone, plaster and ceramics restoration. His projects have include the conservation of monuments and statues in France, Romania, Italy and the United States. He has become a leading expert in laser cleaning of white marble and has given presentations in this field in Italy, London (Lacona Conference) and New York (Public Library.)

In 2012 Jonathan was able to integrate his skill in mountaineering with his interest in stone conservation. He formed a company  specializing in the use of ropes to access problematic areas on facades and historic buildings. Using this technique, he and his company are monitoring, surveying and stabilizing the facades of many historic buildings, primarily in Venice.
